Obituary for Douglas H. Fahrney
FAHRNEY, Douglas of Riverview, passed away on his 79th birthday on Wednesday, October 2, 2019. He was born at home in Newton, IA. He was a remarkable man who touched many lives and will be truly missed by all that knew and loved him. He attended Newton Community schools and married his high school sweetheart Beth Stockton before moving his family to Brandon, FL in 1969. He owned and operated a family business, Lucki Tyme Pizza for many years prior to owning and operating Convenient Food Mart stores for 20 years before he retired. Throughout the years that he was raising his children Doug was very active in youth sports organizations in the Brandon area in the 70’s and 80’s and was one of the 3 people that started the Brandon Steelers and Brandon Cowboys organizations. His passion was coaching football and baseball but his softball girls at Bloomingdale Little League were special. He was known and revered for always carrying the Softball Rule Book in his back pocket while he coached. The girls and Doug were successful and won many championships over the years. He made a special impact in the lives of many young people who still remember Coach Fahrney in a special way.
Doug enjoyed the water/fishing and visiting the Blue Ridge Mountains. He took many trips to Canada over the years with his father and then carried that tradition forward with his son. As the family grew he enjoyed the annual beach week at Englewood. No matter the occasion his eyes lit up when the grandkids and great grandkids came to visit. They were his pride and joy.
He was predeceased by his parents, Harold and Leona Fahrney; sisters, Janeane Carrier and Karen Reid. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Beth; son, Eric Fahrney (Dannette); daughters, Lisa Fahrney (Vicki), Jill Fahrney (Pete), and Jodi Gerena; sister, Jana Lust (Melvin); grandchildren, Steven Gerena (Christina), Ryan Gerena (Alicia), Meghan Gerena (Matt), Devanie Frye (Cory), Sydnie Fahrney, Dalton Bohannon and Aaron Marietta; great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Annabelle, StevieLynne, Olivia, Bentley, Landon, and Rylee.
A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at 3 PM on Sunday, October 6, 2019 at Southern Funeral Care with the family receiving friends one hour prior to the service.
