Obituary for William Craven Bass

February 27, 1951 – July 21, 2024

William “Craven” Bass celebrated as he walked with Jesus into our Lord’s kingdom on a

beautiful Sunday evening, July 21, 2024. He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Bass

Behrens and brother-in-law, Tom Behrens of Riverview, FL., nephews, Peyton, Taylor

and Matthew McDaniel of St.Petersburg, FL., as well as many dear Bass and

Timberlake relatives in North Carolina. Craven was preceded in death by his parents

Aaron and Rosa Bass of Raleigh, NC and his beloved brother, Jim Bass and sister-in-

law Vickie Bass of Banner Elk, NC. Craven lived with Jim and Vickie for several years

where he joined Foscoe Christian Church and found a sweet supportive community of

believers who embraced him and his joyful spirit.

Craven was a fearless traveler, performer, talented composer, and artist. He had no

problem getting on a bus, train, or airplane by himself to visit with loved ones. Living

with Jim and Vickie and then with Elizabeth and Tom gave him many opportunities to

have time with family, friends and time to pursue his music and art.

Wherever Craven went, he was sure to share his love of Christ in both the songs he

wrote, and with his artwork in the colorful Zentangle style. He could quickly become the

center of attention in any room he happened to enter, and easily made friends wherever

he went. He was truly an ambassador for Christ.

Craven spent his formative school years between home in Raleigh and Caswell

Developmental Center in Kinston, NC which he always fondly remembered and where

he developed a love of R&B music from the 60’s & 70’s. He graduated from Needham

Broughton High School in Raleigh, NC.

His passing was peaceful and quiet, without pain or discomfort. He will be missed by the

many who loved him.

The memorial service that was planned on Sunday October 13, 2024 at the Foscoe Christian

Church, 8834 NC-105, Banner Elk, NC at 4:00 p.m. has been canceled due to the storm damage and destruction in Banner, NC and the surrounding areas.
