William "Billy" Frederick Knapp
KNAPP, William Frederick (Billy), passed at the age of 79 on Friday, February 17th, 2017 while doing one of his favorite things, running. Billy was born on December 31st, 1937 to Leila and Earl Knapp. He attended Plant High School (1951-55) where he played 3rd Base for the Panthers. He graduated from the University of Florida in 1960 and made lifelong friends as a Gator and member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. Billy was a decorated veteran of the Navy, proudly serving his country as an aeronautical navigator and playing an instrumental role during the Cuban missile crisis. After completing his service with the Navy, he worked at Raytheon for 18 years in Miami, FL. Billy moved back to Tampa in the early 1990s, working as a financial advisor for AIG VALIC then finally enjoying his retirement with his family. He is survived by Jill Simpson Knapp, the love of his life for the past 63 years and wife of 56; his three daughters, Kim Koury, Karen Matthews (Michael), and Kelly Cunningham (Brendan); his grandchildren, Camaron and Kai Koury, Kayla, Kerry and Kennedy Cunningham; his sister Judy Morris and his nephew Don Simonds. A Celebration of Life Service will be held for Billy on Friday, March 24th from 5 to 7 pm at the Tampa Bay Yacht Club in south Tampa. Please send donations to the Wounded Warriors Project (www.woundedwarriorproject.org) in lieu of flowers.
