Obituary for Stephen Irvin Saunders, III
SAUNDERS, III, Stephen Irvin, 72, of Brandon, passed away on Monday, February 26, 2018. A native of Milledgeville, GA, he had resided here since 1985 coming from Maitland, FL. He served as a Green Beret with the Army Special Forces in Vietnam. Saunders was a Staff Sergeant with the 5th SFG (Airborne). He was also a graduate of the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Master of Public Administration. He was a member of Apostles Lutheran Church, Brandon; retired as a Major after 20 years with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office; Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts and received the Silver Beaver and Wood Badge; member of DeSoto Masonic Lodge #105; Kiwanis Club of Greater Brandon; Past President and Board member of the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce; received the H.L. Culbreath Award from the Tampa Chamber of Commerce; Awarded the Key Citizen Award from the Brandon Chamber of Commerce and the Alice B. Tompkins Award from the Brandon Community Roundtable; Florida Frontiersmen of the American Mountain Men and a graduate of Leadership Tampa. He is survived by his English Bulldog, Bandit and his wife of 47 years, Susan; son, Stephen I. Saunders, IV (Heather); grandchildren, Mason Stephen Saunders, Emery Shea Saunders; daughters, Elisabeth Anne Saunders (Jeff), granddog, Cady Saunders, Shannon Dingle (Lee); 6 grandchildren. Services will be held Sunday, March 11, 2018 at 2 p.m. at Apostles Lutheran Church, Brandon followed by a burial at Limona Cemetery. A Celebration of life Reception will follow at Center Place, Brandon. Memorial donations may be made to operation Smile or the Brandon Kiwanis Foundation.
