Obituary for Richard Steven King

Richard Steven King II, 85, passed away Thursday, May 8, 2025. He was born September 2, 1939 in Johnson City, Tennessee to Richard Steven King and Anna Ruth Worley King. He survived his parents and siblings, Janice Bosanquet, Jimmy King and Rosemary Jones. He is survived by the love of his life for 55 years, Brenda King; daughters Stephanie (husband Danny) and Amanda (husband Marc); grandchildren, Bailey (husband Jameson), Garrett (wife Jamie), Raegan and great granddaughter, Oaklyn. He loved and was loved by many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He moved to Florida at the age of six, growing up in Leesburg, Florida. He graduated in 1957 from Leesburg High School where he played basketball, was known for his dancing and it was said, “His friends are many, and his foes, are there any?” He went on to attend Auburn University to study Architecture, and later Business. He soon joined the Army where he faithfully served in Strike Command at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida. While there, he proudly stood Honor Guard for President John F. Kennedy, three days before his assassination. He went on to work 35 years for Celotex, a division of Jim Walter Corporation. He retired in 2000 as their National Sales Manager. After retirement, he spent his days playing golf and helping his girls fix their houses. It didn’t take long for him to return to the work force, where he was in and out of retirement two more times. He sold flooring at Abbey Carpet and Flooring America. In between, he made many trips driving “the bus” for his grandchildren to and from school, coaching golf, attending sporting events, building gardens, watching the birds and feeding the giraffes.

The life of Dick King was a testament of his love for Christ. In 1970 he heard the gospel for the first time, and this forever changed the direction of how he lived his life. He wanted to make Jesus known, so he became a part of the Evangelism Explosion team. His love for others led him to faithfully serve at FBCTT as high school and college Sunday school teacher, girls basketball coach, Beach Blast security guard, Christmas set builder, and usher. He was a mentor to many over the years, from his own siblings and family, neighbors, baseball and basketball players and countless other students. After faithfully serving at FBCTT for 29 years, he and Brenda, joined Global Refuge Community Church. He loved his time serving alongside other faithful servants from all over the world. In recent years, Dick and Brenda began attending and joined First Baptist Church of Brandon, where they found a lasting church home and the Lord blessed them with some special friendships.

Dick King lived his life connecting and loving others in a way that left a true legacy.
