Obituary for Phyllis M. Gibson

Phyllis Murray Gibson, 79, of Apollo Beach, FL, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2025, surrounded by her family. She was born on August 27, 1945, in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

As a young woman, Phyllis moved to Tampa, FL, to live with her Aunt Katherine and Uncle C.F., where she later met and married the love of her life, Ralph Haynes Gibson. Together they built a beautiful life and had just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on July 31st of this year.

Phyllis was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Her life was a true testament to faith, love, kindness, and generosity.

She worked in hospital administration until her retirement, after which she discovered a passion for painting. In addition to her art, she had a beautiful singing voice and a gift for playing the piano. She loved music, nature, and—above all—her family. A simple woman at heart, Phyllis found her greatest joy in time spent with loved ones.

She expressed her love through her art and continued to paint for as long as she was able. One of her most treasured ministries was painting one-of-a-kind angels to comfort those who were grieving or going through difficult times. Over the years, she painted hundreds of these angels—gifts of love and encouragement that touched our family, friends, and even, upon request complete strangers.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her son, Paul Haynes Gibson; father, James Paul Murray; mother, Frances Jesse Murray, brother-in-law, Stan Hayes Sr.; sister, Elaine Hayes; brother-in-law, J. Don Brock; mother-in-law, Hazel Griffin; father-in-law, Ralph Gibson Sr.; brother-in-law, Joe Newlan and sister-in-law, Joanne Newlan.

She is survived by her loving husband, Ralph Gibson Jr.; daughter, Becky Carrillo, and son-in-law, Anthony Carrillo; sister, Sam Brock; grandson, Justin Haynes Gibson; granddaughter, Katie Gibson Buti; great grand-children, Camryn, Sage and Oceon; nieces, Kelley Caporice, Christie Gleeson, Devin Sprouse, and Annette Bellflower; nephews, Stan Hayes Jr., Billy Cooper and Eddie Franklin; great niece, Payton Sprouse and great nephew, Daxton Gleeson.

Services will be held on Saturday, September 6th, at 1pm with visitation one hour prior to services at Southern Funeral Care, Riverview, FL.

In Lieu of flowers/Those who wish to donate to the American Cancer Society.
