Obituary for Philip John Dowling

Philip John “Philly” Dowling, 78, of Apollo Beach, FL passed away peacefully at his home on January 11th 2026 surrounded by loved ones. Born in Middletown, CT, the son of the late John and Rita (Ahern) Dowling, he lived his life marked by service, hard work, and with a deep devotion to friends and family.

A proud United States Marine, Philip served his country with honor during the Vietnam War (1967-1971). His time in the Marines would shape his lifelong sense of discipline and loyalty—qualities that guided him throughout his life.

After returning home, Philip built a steady and meaningful life in Middletown, CT, working with the Connecticut Laborers Union, helping others as an Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor, and becoming a trusted friend and neighbor to many. In 2003 he married his long time partner, Marsha Dowling, with whom he shared 17 years of marriage before her passing in 2021. Not a day went by that he didn’t speak of her with affection and gratitude.

Later in life, Philip settled in Florida, embracing the warm weather, open skies, and the slower pace that allowed him to enjoy time with family (and friends), and also the simple pleasures he cherished - treks to the beach, going for long drives, watching (and passionately cheering on) the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team, and spending time with his granddog Nesta.

He is survived by his stepson Justin Lockhart of Brandon, FL, stepdaughter Michele Jordan and her husband Greg Jordan of Wake Forest, NC. Son Christopher Dowling, wife Kelly, and granddaughter Devyn Dowling of Selbyville, DE.

Besides his wife and parents, Philip was also predeceased by his sister Joan Dowling and brother Thomas Dowling.

A graveside service will be held Friday May 8th 12:30 p.m. at the Sarasota National Cemetary. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
