Obituary for Mildred Louise Lastinger
LASTINGER, Mildred Louise Baucom

LASTINGER, Mildred Louise Baucom, a dignified Southern lady and descendent of east Hillsborough County Moore, Chastain and Baucom families, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, January 7, 2007, at Tampa General Hospital with her loving family at her side. She was born November 2, 1926, to Fred Day and Reta Chastain Baucom in Seffner. As a young girl, she played the piano at the First Baptist Church of Seffner. She became a member of the First Baptist Church of Brandon in 1943, where she was a Sunday School teacher, choir member and church pianist. She especially loved decorating for church socials. Her hobby was gardening and she had a "green thumb". Mildred graduated from Brandon (High) School and the University of Tampa. She began her teaching career in 1948 under her high school principal, E.F. McLane. It was while she was teaching third grade at Brandon School that she met the love of her life, Oscar Lastinger. She taught elementary school in the Brandon area 34 years, first at Brandon School, then Palm River Elementary and Walter S. Yates Elementary. She was past president of the Brandon Old-Timers Association. She was predeceased by her parents; sister, Nancy Baucom Stinson and brother, Fred Baucom. She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Oscar Lastinger; children, Becky (Ron) Jordan; Martha (Frank) Henderson and George (Cathy) Lastinger; grandchildren, Audra Butler, Matthew and Victoria Lastinger, Dylan and Shawn Henderson; two nieces and five nephews. The family would like to express its sincere gratitude to Drs. Gregg Gutowski, Kathryn Kepes, Misti Wilson and Emmanuel Zervos, Tracie Patel, PA and their staff; and the nurses of Tampa General Hospital's ICU and "4F" for the excellent and compassionate care. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, January 10, 2007, from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. at Southern Funeral Care, 10510 Riverview Dr., Riverview. A Celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, January 11, 2007, at 1:00 P.M. at the First Baptist Church of Brandon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 216 N. Parsons Ave., Brandon, FL 33510 in her memory.
