Obituary for Mildred Alva Mays
Mildred Alva Mays
MAYS, Mildred Alva Hendrix Goolsby, 97, of Riverview, departed this life for her heavenly home on Saturday, June 22, 2013. Born April 2, 1916, the daughter of William David and Alva Edson Purvis Hendrix, she spent her childhood years in Bloomingdale, where she was born. At 17, Alva married Otha Guy Goolsby, 12 years her senior, with the couple being married on May 6, 1933, in the tiny Boyette Baptist Church by Rev. Lawrence Collins. Their marriage ended after 54 years with the death of Otha in 1987. Mrs. Goolsby and longtime friend, Gaylan Mays, were married 9 years prior to his death in 2002. Considered by her five children as a wonderful and loving Christian mother, Mrs. Goolsby taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years, many of which were in the "Pine Church" Peru Baptist Church, now known as First Baptist Church of Riverview. In about 1948, when new facilities were built for the expanding church, Otha, a longtime deacon of the church, bought the large room knotty pine structure, disassembling it, then rebuilding it as his family's home. It still stands today south of Boyette Road next to Goolsby Point Shopping Center. Alva is survived by her sister, Trudie Pierce, many nieces and nephews and her five children, Guy Goolsby, Norma Goolsby Frazier, Carol Brown, Sue Clyatt and Mary Ann (Phil) VenDitto. Grandchildren, Rhonda Suggs, Guy Frazier, Eddie, Gary and Robert Goolsby, Cheri (Jimmy) Tillett, Melody (Jim) Feist, Joy (John) Scott, Keith Brown, Terri (Skip) Exum, Wendi (Dan) Sumner, Staci Clyatt, Tanya (Noah) Kaa and Tony VenDitto; 21 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren. Melissa Goolsby, Vicki Frazier Bunkley and Danielle Nicole Suggs, now deceased, no doubt joined the throng of many who welcomed the much loved and long-time Riverview resident, Mildred Alva Goolsby Mays.
