SCHMIDT, Mary Jane, 83 of Brandon, FL passed away Sunday, December 7, 2014, at LifePath Hospice after a brief but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Mary was born on May 3, 1931 in Pekin, IL to Herbert and Gertrude Smith. She graduated from Pekin Community High School in 1949 and worked in various secretarial positions including those at Caterpillar Tractor Company, the City of Pekin and the University of Arizona. On March 24, 1974 she married Richard Howard and they traveled extensively, living in Georgia, Italy, Arizona, Colorado, Tennessee and then settling in Valrico, FL. Richard passed away November 13, 2004. Preceded in death by her parents, and brother, Dr. Robert Smith of Colon, MI, Mary is survived by her loving husband, Paul Schmidt, Brandon, FL; her children, Cindy (John) Rees, Ft. Myers, FL and Kent (Sarah) Caulkins, Green Valley, IL; numerous stepchildren; 3 grandchildren, Caitlin Hanaburgh, Alayna Caulkins and Andy Caulkins and she became a great grandma this year with the birth of Jaxon Hanaburgh. There was no such place as far away for Mary. She traveled the world even into her eighties with tireless energy and a passion to experience new things. She loved to entertain, cooking fabulous meals for family and friends. She attended Immanuel Lutheran Church, Brandon, FL and was a member of the Ladies and Altar Guild. She loved God with all her heart and was grateful for all his blessings. Well done Mary, good and faithful servant of the Lord.

Funeral Information

A memorial service will be held 10:00 A.M. Friday, January 2, 2015, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, with the family receiving friends one hour prior to services. Inurnment will follow at 2:00 P.M. at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL.
