Obituary for Martha Leah Shay
MARTHA VARNUM SHAY, age 73, flew away to Heaven on February 18, 2018. Born in Plant City, Florida, Martha graduated from Brandon High School in 1962, and resided in Zephyrhills, Florida for the past 40 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard Varnum and Evelyn Varnum, and her sister, Melanie Varnum. She is survived by her husband, George Shay; brothers, Moses Varnum and Al Varnum (June), and her sisters, Patricia Varnum, Annie Faye Shiflet, Freida Varnum, Pamela Meeks (Randy) and Jean Hancock (Terry); her children, Bill Brookins (Kayann) and Kelly Brookins (Kimberly); her grandchildren, Jacob, Jared, Kelly Jr (Melissa), Alysha, Tyler (Allison), Tim, and Brittni (Hunter); and her great-grandchildren, Kelly III, Kade, Kailyn, Evelyn, Xavier, Gunner, and soon-to-arrive Emmett. Martha’s passion was her family, and she lived her life around them. She could also saddle a horse and barrel race it, bandage a wound in nothing flat, and shoot the head off of a snake. Her professional career was as an investment banker at many banks in the Hillsborough County and Pasco County areas. She was beautiful, graceful and charismatic, and turned many a head wherever she went, but her real beauty was inside of her huge heart. She loved hard and gently, and was ever so protective of those she loved. Our lives are forever changed without her.
