Obituary for Marco A Flores Figueroa

Marco Antonio Flores Figueroa, age 86, of Comayaguela, Honduras, rejoined our heavenly Father on May 05, 2026 at 03:09 AM in Riverview, Florida. He passed peacefully surrounded by family and most notably his beloved lifelong companion Nelida Flores Thiebaud, who he shared over 60 years of marriage with.

Born on June 13, 1939 in Comayaguela, Honduras to Gil Flores and Margarita Figueroa. Marco had a long and fulfilling life. He spend his childhood in Tegucigalpa with his parents and two sisters Gladys and Nora.

Once he finished high school he attended college and became an educator. After college he moved to Puerto Cortes, Honduras where took his first job as a mathematics professor. However, Marco’s high intellect and mathematical ability led him to explore and succeed in a different career path. In his 30’s he studied computer programming and took a position as a software programmer for the British-American Tobacco company working there until he retired in the 1990’s.

During his time in Puerto Cortes, he met Nelida and after 2 years of courtship they were married on December 18th, 1965. By this time they were both living in San Pedro Sula, Honduras were they established their family. Many joyful life moments occurred there for Marco, he and Nelida bought their first house, and in the following decade their family grew with the birth of their son, Marco, and two daughters, Astrid and Vesna. Later he took on the loving role of grandfather to his 7 grandchildren and moved to Florida just to be near them and offer them his time, advice, and love.

Although a introvert, particularly in his youth, he had a strong sense of serving his community and a spirit of sharing with others. Because of his tendency to be reserved many do not know interesting things about his life. For instance, he was a habitual basketball player in his youth and also played soccer with his work’s soccer team. He loved to dance to fast paced music such as merengue and his wife remembers him particularly enjoying ABBA and Frank Sinatra.

But he also enjoyed intellectual pursuits, adamantly reading books on a diversity of complex subjects from science to history, his favorite magazine for years was Popular Mechanics. One less commonly known thing about Marco was his love of poetry, including romantic poetry. It is said that he wooed Nelida to date and marry him though romantic poetry, one of his favorite poets was Manuel Bernal.

There is one fundamental thing that guided and shaped Marco’s life in his older years, and that was his passion for Christ and his devotion to his faith. Upon his acknowledging that his life journey was concluding one of the last things he asked for was to have songs of faith be sung to him, particularly a song titled Shema Ysrael, a song based on a prayer that is central to the the principles of the neocatechumenal communities he was part of since 1988
