Livia Scooler, age 92, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2025, in Tampa, Florida, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer—just one day after celebrating her 92nd birthday.
Born on May 15, 1933, in Trieste, Italy, Livia immigrated to the United States in 1959 in search of a better life. With determination and grace, she taught herself English and built a fulfilling life in America. A resilient and devoted mother, she raised three children while her husband served as a career Army officer and did two tours during the Vietnam War. Following their divorce, Livia became a symbol of independence, returning to work and living on her own terms for the rest of her life.
A lover of the outdoors, Livia was an avid gardener who spent countless days tending to her beloved yard. She was also affectionately known as the “Cat Lady of Town and Country,” caring for numerous neighborhood cats and a feral colony in her backyard. Her deep compassion for animals defined much of her daily life. Her dedication to her feline companions was made possible by the loving support of Jessica, Consuelo, and Geisha, who assisted in caring for both Livia and her cats, allowing her to remain at home as long as possible.
Livia is survived by her daughter Diane Brabant and son-in-law Peter Brabant; her sons David and Jeffrey Scooler; grandchildren Christopher O'Connor and his wife Bruna, Tyler O'Connor, Savannah and her husband Andrew Tinner, and Sidney Scooler; and great-grandchildren Luke O'Connor, Aurora and Athena Tinner.
She was preceded in death by her father, mother, brother, and sister—all of Trieste, Italy.
A service to honor Livia’s life will be held on June 14th at Southern Funeral Home, located at 10510 Riverview Dr., Riverview, FL 33578.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay—a cause close to her heart.
