Leonard "Len" Mervin Nelson
NELSON, Lt. Cmdr. Leonard Mervin, USN (Ret.), of Valrico, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 12, 2010. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; four children, John (Lynn) Nelson, Centreville, VA, Nancy (Tom) Ebersole, Winter Haven, FL, Laura (Paul) Scatena, Woodcliff Lake, NJ and James Nelson, Waldwick, NJ; three step-children, Dan (Kathy) Stephen, Valrico, FL, Diane (Sim) Simpkins and David (Laura) Stephen, both of Lakeland, FL; seven grandchildren, Kate, in VA, Michelle, Jason and Alex, in NJ, Liza, in AZ and Kyle and Adam, in FL; four step-grandchildren, Cassandra, Amanda, William and Jacob, all of FL and five great-grandchildren. Len retired from the US Navy after 26 years; 14 years enlisted to Chief Petty Officer and 12 more years as a Commissioned Officer. His highest decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Achievement Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Honor Medal 1st Class. His last 4 years of service were with Recon Attack Squadron and Wing as Reconnaissance Officer. After his retirement from the US Navy, he was with E. Leitz, Inc., US Agency, Leica Camera. Len was a lifetime member of the VFW, American Legion, Military Officers Association of American, National Association of Naval Photography, Fleet Reserve Association, 1977-78 Post Commander, VFW Post 130, Westwood, NJ and an active member of Southside Baptist Church, Brandon, FL.
Funeral Information
Funeral services will be held 10:00 A.M. Friday, October 15, 2010, at Southside Baptist Church, with Rev. Pete Vande Weghe officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will be at Barrancas National Cemetery, NAS, Pensacola, FL.
