Larry “Y.T.” Uebbing, a proud Army veteran and longtime tugboat captain, passed away peacefully on October 3, 2024 at the age of 95.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Larry was drafted into the U.S. Army Signal Corps in 1951, where he was awarded 3 bronze service stars for his meritorious service in Korea. He later went on to become an operating engineer and tugboat captain, navigating the waters of the U.S. Virgin Islands for over 30 years before relocating to Florida.
He was a proud member of American Legion Post 148 and the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 25. Larry was known for his sense of humor and quick wit, and for his love of good food, good beer, and spending time with good friends. Over his lifetime he created countless memories filled with laughter and warmth and will be remembered fondly by all who had the fortune of spending time with him.
Larry was a loving grandfather to Margie, John, and Adam Blanton, Erika and Alex Uebbing, Jeana and Liza Clarkin, and his great-granddaughter Kenzi. He is survived by his brother Joseph Uebbing, son Lawrence Uebbing, daughter Laura Blanton, many nieces, nephews, and dear friends John Barber, Kathy Clarkin, and Betty Denney.
Larry spent much of his life surrounded by the beauty and tranquility of the sea. His loved ones take comfort in knowing he will rest in those cherished waters, as his ashes will be spread between the U.S. Virgin Islands and Florida at a later date.
At his request, there will be no formal service. Instead, his family and friends will honor his memory in their hearts, reflecting on a long life well-lived and filled with joy.
