Obituary for John E. "Bob" McLean, III
McLEAN, III, John Ernest (Bob), went home to be with the Lord Monday morning, October 22, 2018. Born in Tampa on October 9, 1936, Bob descended from two Florida pioneer families. From the time his family arrived in the United States in 1771, every generation farmed the land. Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Millicent; his parents, Jake and Fannie Mae Thompson McLean and brothers, Dewey and Bill. He is survived by daughters, Cindy (Ron) English and Beth (Scott) Bravis; grandchildren, Jake (Leah) English and Sarah Beth (Luke) Satmary and great grandchildren, Trent, Addison and Miller English. The McLeans were one of the earliest and last citrus growing families in Hillsborough County. He was the owner of J. E. McLean and Sons, and Golden Valley Groves. Bob’s first priority was the Lord, followed by his family and church. He was a charter member of Bell Shoals, Maranatha, Lakewood and Fellowship Baptist churches, serving as a deacon in each and most recently as a deacon at First Baptist Church, Dover. A graduate of Brandon High School, Bob attended The University of Florida. After serving in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, he returned to Florida and worked at both Marine Bank and Tampa Electric before joining his father in the citrus business. He served on the board of Florida Citrus Mutual, the Hillsborough County Fair and was past President of Hillsborough County Farm Bureau. With a group of several local men whom he admired, he founded Valrico State Bank where he was honored to serve as Chairman of the board for many years. It is so hard for his family to put into words how much his Godly example shaped our lives. A man who sat at the table with both the wealthy and impoverished, Bob treated each with equal respect. Our dad was the same man in his home as he was in the church pew; devout and Godly, but so down to earth. The world is truly diminished with his passing. Services to celebrate his life will be held at First Baptist Church, Dover at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, October 27, 2018, with visitation beginning at 10:00. Internment at Hillsboro Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Desire Street Ministries, an organization meeting the needs of inner city children.
