James Carson Bates

BATES, James Carson, 90, born January 10th, 1918, of Valrico, FL and formerly of Avon Park, FL, passed away on June 7, 2008, in Sun City Center Hospice House. He was preceded in death by his father, Rev. John Bates, Sr.; mother, Annie Lee Bates; brother, Walter Bates, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Frances Eatman Bates; sister-in-law, Catherine Bates; step-sons, G. Thomas Eatman, Richard H. Eatman, Sr. and his wife, Ann Roberts Eatman; grandchildren, Richard H. Eatman, Jr.; Michael T. Eatman, and Rebecca Eatman Cherry; nephews, Steve Bates and James Bates, and three great- grandchildren. Mr. Bates was a member of a pioneer family in the Peace River Valley and grew up in Bunker, a small community outside of Arcadia, Florida. After graduating from Desoto High School in 1934, he entered Florida Southern College in Lakeland where he studied education for two years. He taught school at Boca Grande for a short while before enlisting in the Armed Forces in 1942. He earned a commission in the Quartermaster Corps after attending Officers' candidate school in Fort Lee, Virginia. He spent 37 months overseas in the European Theater of Operations and separated from the Army in 1946 with the rank of Major. After leaving the service, Mr. Bates served for a time as Veterans Administration Contract Representative in Pass-a-Grill and Gainesville, Florida. He entered the University of Florida in Gainesville and became historian of the Rho Chi Honor Society and graduated in February, 1950 with a BS degree in Pharmacy. Following college he was employed as a registered pharmacist for the nationally known Webb's City, in St. Petersburg and Arcadia Drug Store in Desoto County. Later he operated his own Drug Store, Park Pharmacy, in Avon Park, Florida. He and his wife, Frances, ran the drug store for over 15 years and they resided in a home on Lake Lotela. Son of a Baptist Minister, Mr. Bates was active in Church Activities all of his adult life and served in various leadership roles in the First Baptist Church of Avon Park and later the First Baptist Church of Brandon. Graveside Services will be held at 11:00AM, Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at Oak Hill Burial Park in Lakeland, Florida, family and friends are invited. Graveside Services will be held at 11:00AM, Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at Oak Hill Burial Park in Lakeland, Florida, family and friends are invited. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 10, 2008 from 6:00 to 8:00PM at Southern Funeral Care in Riverview, Florida.
