
Obituary for Homer C. "Cal" Henderson, Jr.
Homer Caddell (Cal) Henderson, Jr. passed away on July 16, 2021, at the age of 77. He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Jeanne Henderson; beloved fur babies Gabby and Sully; daughter, Sheri (David) Portalatin; two grandchildren, David Portalatin and Vanessa Portalatin; two sisters, Troy Taylor and Jackie (Dean) Truesdell; brother Larry Henderson; mother-in-love Aneita Capitano Asbell; brother-in-love Frank (Sandy) Capitano, Jr.; sister-in-love Tammy (Tim) Bracewell; Nieces and nephews Shelly (JR) Burton, Nicole (John) Felton, Renee Williams (Greg), Nicole Morgan, Frank (Liz) Capitano III, Tristen Bracewell, Tyler Bracewell, MacKenzie Knight and Emmie Knight. He was preceded in death by his parents, Helen Ryals, Jack Ryals and Homer Caddell Henderson, Sr.; his brother Bill Ryals; and his fathers-in-love Frank Capitano Sr. and Norman Asbell.
Sheriff Henderson began his service to his country with the U.S. Army in 1961 and began his law enforcement career in 1965 with the Tampa Police Department. In 1967, he joined the United States Border Patrol and then served with the Central Intelligence Agency in South Vietnam. In 1969, he was hired by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office as a patrol deputy. Sheriff Henderson rose through the ranks, eventually serving as the Major in each of the operational divisions of the Sheriff’s Office. In 1985, he was promoted to Colonel of the Enforcement Operations Department. Cal served as the Sheriff of Hillsborough County for three 4-year terms.
After retiring from the Sheriff’s Office, Cal enjoyed traveling with Jeanne, hunting with his friends and camping with friends and family.
His life and legacy will be honored and remembered at a Celebration of Life on July 28, 2021, at 11:00 A.M. at The Regent, 6437 Watson Rd., Riverview. Family, close friends and those who would like to join them will be gathering after the service at The Barn at Winthrop, 11349 Bloomingdale Ave, Riverview. Since there will be no internment, the family has requested that there be no flowers. Anyone who wishes to honor Sheriff Henderson is encouraged to make a contribution in his memory to Lifepath Hospice Sun City Center Hospice House, 3723 Upper Creek Dr., Ruskin, FL 33573.
