Obituary for Henry Hampton McKeithan, III

McKeithan III, Henry Hampton, 92, of Valrico, passed away peacefully on July 14,

2024 at HCA Florida South Shore Hospital in Sun City Center. Henry was born in

Charleston, SC on January 8, 1932 to his parents, Henry Hampton McKeithan, Jr.,

and Carrie Weeks McKeithan. He graduated from Charleston High School in 1950

and went on to serve in the US Army for three (3) years. After his time in the

Army, Henry obtained a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of South

Carolina. He also pursued graduate work at the University of Maryland. Henry

married Loretta Shokes in Charleston, SC on December 27, 1959. He returned to

the Army to serve during the Vietnam conflict, ultimately retiring with 32 years of

service at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel

.

Henry was a lifelong member of The Washington Light Infantry and was also a

Gideon. After coming to Florida in 1980, he served as the ROTC instructor at

Mulberry High School for 12 years. Henry was a devoted member of the First

Baptist Church of Brandon, along with his wife, Loretta.


Henry is survived by his wife, Loretta McKeithan; four (4) children, Hank (Susan)

McKeithan, Daniel (Holly) McKeithan, Randall (Sonia) McKeithan, and Amy (Brian)

Blair; six (6) grandchildren, Matthew, Alex, Brian, Will, Katherine, and Emily;

brother, Cliff McKeithan, and sister, Carolyn Lindsay. On July 8, 2024, Henry and

Loretta became great-grandparents to Robin McKeithan.


Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 1, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM

at First Baptist Church of Brandon (216 N. Parsons Avenue, Brandon, Florida

33510). Celebration of Life Ceremony will follow immediately after the visitation

at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church of Brandon. Interment will be held on Friday,

August 2, 2024, at 11:30 AM at the Sarasota National Cemetery (9810 State Road

72, Sarasota, Florida 34241).


In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Metropolitan

Ministries or Tunnels to Towers Foundation.
