Gregory Robert Vest passed away on August 19, 2024, surrounded by family in Tampa, Florida. Greg was born on May 20, 1955 in Ames, Iowa and is survived by his two brothers, Gary and Scott Vest. Greg leaves behind five adult children with families of their own: Jason Vest, Juliana Brost, Aaron Vest, Shawn Vest, and Sarah LeMay. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Ariel Huffman. Greg and Anna Becker were married on August 3, 1974 and separated after 34 years together.
Early in their marriage, they moved to Germany where Greg served in the army as a medic for 4 years. This eventually led to a career in nursing after he graduated from the IU School of Nursing. While in Germany, they also joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Besides his long career in nursing, he managed the mental health unit at St. Francis Hospital and spent time counseling inmates for substance abuse. Later in life, he drove a school bus for Avon Community School Corporation.
Greg cherished the time with his 11 grandchildren. He delighted in watching them grow and could often be found on the floor playing with the young or counseling the teenagers. Spending time in nature with those he loved was a great passion during his life. For decades, Greg influenced many by serving as a scoutmaster, teaching survival skills and stewardship of the land. In church, he served in many capacities, including roles as a counselor and leader of youth groups.
Greg was a versatile and talented chef who could cook gourmet meals from the kitchen to the campfire. He found joy in feeding those he loved, and he passed on this passion to all his children. Greg could often be found holding a fishing pole wherever there was enough water to hold a fish.
The memorial for Greg will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at 900 E Stop 11 Rd in Indianapolis on Monday, November 25th at 6 pm.
