It is with sadness and yet hearts full of joy and gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Edwina Loreta (Bartlett) Butts on March 6, 2026. Known as Eddie by friends and family, she departed this world at the age of 99 (4 days after her 99th birthday), embraced by her loving family in her Dover, Florida home, a place that has been the center of countless memories and love-filled gatherings. Born on March 2, 1927, in Clearwater, Edwina was the eldest of four children born to Tommy and Zometa Bartlett (sisters Shirley Faye and Wilene and brother Barry). Edwina's academic prowess was evident early on, as she graduated as the Salutatorian from Hillsborough High School, a testament to her dedication and love for learning.
On April 9, 1948, Edwina married the love of her life, Leon T. Butts, embarking on a journey that would span 66 wonderful years. Together, they built a family steeped in love and faith, welcoming three children: Leon T. “Tom” (Laura) Butts, Debra “Debbie” (Charlie) Fortner, and John A. (Carol) Butts. Edwina and Leon's legacy blossomed into a large family tree, boasting nine grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and the exciting anticipation of their first great-great-grandchild. Edwina's life was dedicated to her family, where her career as a devoted wife and mother was unmatched. Her nurturing spirit and unwavering commitment to their upbringing left an indelible mark on each of their lives. Her home was a sanctuary filled with warmth, guidance, and the aroma of home-cooked meals. No one ever left hungry or without something offered to take home. A woman of deep faith, Edwina was a lifelong member of the Baptist church. As a member of Goodwill Baptist (Tampa), Providence Baptist (Riverview), and most recently Bloomingdale Baptist (Valrico), she sang in the choir and was a Sunday School teacher. She loved and appreciated her church family. Her faith was not just a part of her life; it was the cornerstone upon which her life was built, and she instilled those values in her family.
Edwina was preceded in death by her beloved husband Leon, her parents, and her dear siblings; however, her legacy is carried forward by her children, grandchildren, and the generations to come. Her life was a testament to the power of prayer, love, and dedication.
Her family extends their heartfelt gratitude to her niece, Wendi (Rick) Robinson, and Jan Kight for their devoted care and companionship over recent years, as well as a multitude of family members whose support she cherished.
Edwina leaves behind a legacy of faith, family, and love. Her spirit will continue to guide her family as they navigate life with the strength and grace she so effortlessly imparted. Her memory will be cherished and celebrated, as she rejoins her loved ones in eternal peace.
She will be greatly missed!
