Obituary for David Jonathan Heckman

David J, Heckman, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2025, in Valrico, Florida. He was born on November 4, 1944, in Reading, Pennsylvania, to Rudolph F. Heckman and Margaret Newman. David lived a life full of purpose, dedication, and love, leaving behind an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Preceded in death by his parents and his cherished grandson, Jarrod Allen-David Naberhaus. David is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Laura Heckman; his daughter, Angela Naberhaus (Mark), his bonus-children, Zachary Carroll and Rachael Carroll; and his adored grandchildren, Landon, Everett, and Sadie. He is also survived by his brother James Heckman (Susan); Marti Heckman (Randy); and Kathy Bishop, together with many nieces and nephews. His family was the center of his universe, and he took immense pride in their accomplishments and happiness.

David's commitment to service extended beyond his family. He proudly served in the National Guard with honor and distinction. David also built a remarkable career at the Florida Department of Transportation, where he retired after thirty-two years serving at the pleasure of the Governor as both a Professional Service Administrator and civil engineer. His strong work ethic, dependability, and attention to detail earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and employees throughout his tenure.

Throughout his life, David was deeply involved in his community and various organizations. He served as the Program Chairman for the Tampa Chapter of the American Society of Highway Engineers and was a charter member of the FDOT/Florida Institute of Consulting Engineers. His leadership extended to the FDOT/FICE Joint Coordinating and Liaison Committees, where his contributions helped shape the future of engineering in Florida.

David's passions extended into the realm of sports, where he found joy both as a competitor and a supporter of young athletes. His love for sports was evident in his many roles, including Chairman of the Sunshine Games Boys Basketball Tournament, Chairman of the Florida AAU Boys Basketball Committee, and as a Co-Founder and Member of the Bartow Yellow Jackets Booster Club. He also held the position of Managing Director for various prestigious events, including the 7-Up National AAU Select Team Tour of Europe and the National Jr. Men's Tour of the Soviet Union in 1983. David's enthusiasm for sports was infectious, and if there was a ball involved, he was sure to be found cheering on teams and encouraging young athletes.

David's life story is one of dedication, purpose, love, and service. His laughter and jovial spirit could light up a room, and his fun-loving nature made him a friend to many. As we bid farewell to a remarkable man, we take comfort in knowing that his legacy will continue to live on in the memories we cherish and in the lives he touched. His stories, laughter, and unwavering support will never be forgotten.

A funeral service to honor David's life will be held on May 2, 2025, at 3:00 PM with a visitation one hour prior to services, at Southern Funeral Care, 10510 Riverview Drive, Riverview, Florida 33578.
