Obituary for Brian Thomas Smith
Brian Thomas Smith, 71, of Valrico, FL passed away on June 25th, 2022, surrounded by loved ones after a difficult battle with Parkinson’s disease. Brian was born in 1951 to the late Vernon Gordon Smith, MD and the late Gloria Rosemary in Buffalo, NY. Brian graduated from The DeVeaux School, Niagara Falls, NY in 1969 and from Baldwin Wallace University, Berea, OH with a B.A. in history in 1973. Brian began his career as a high school history teacher, moving to pharmaceutical and medical sales in Buffalo, NY, Kansas City, MO, and Pittsburgh, PA, before retiring to Valrico, FL. In retirement Brian enjoyed golf, playing cards, pickleball and pursued his interest in sailing. He will be remembered by his family and friends for his unique brand of humor, his encyclopedic knowledge of historical events, and his innate ability to seemingly make a goofy face in any photograph. His siblings will fondly recall his penchant for mischief, such as creating a golf course or an ice rink out of their neighbors’ yards. His children will recall his “experimental” cooking and no matter how much was left, there was always just a spoonful. Brian is preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Gloria. He is survived by his wife, Janet; three children from a prior marriage, Scott, Sean (Kelli) and Lindsay; and his grandchildren, Vaila and Nikola. He is also survived by his siblings, Gordon (Gwenyth, dec.), Penny (Cal), Bruce (S. Dian), L. B. (Leesa) and Elizabeth (Joseph). He will be dearly remembered by his stepchildren, Robert (Veronika), Cliff (Tia), and Jennifer (Michael), and his step-grandchildren, Joseph, Emily, Lauren, Macy, Karina and Ian. A private ceremony will be held by the family. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to The Michael J. Fox Foundation which is dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease.
