Compton, Blanch “Christine” (Brentlinger)
September 27, 1927- June 29, 2024
On June 29th, 2024, Blanch “Christine” (Brentlinger) Compton (96) passed away peacefully at The Meridian at Brandon-Memory Care in Tampa, FL, surrounded by her loving family.
Christine was born September 27, 1927, in Jefferson County, KY to David L and Bessie (Wright) Brentlinger. She was raised in Louisville, Kentucky and was one of 11 children.
She married the love of her life Golden “Bud” Compton on December 20th, 1947. Together they had 5 children; David, Michael, Judy, Peggy, and Rebecca “Becky.” In 1956, Christine and Bud moved their family from Kentucky to Tampa, FL where they continued to grow and raise their family. Grandchildren soon became the shining stars in Christine’s eyes and “Mammaw”, as they affectionately nick-named her, adored her new role as a grandmother.
As devout Christian, she enjoyed attending East Tampa Christian Church, never missing a service. Christine was more than just a member of the church, she relished in her position as a Sunday school teacher for over 35 years. She also loved volunteering during church revivals as well as vacation bible school.
All her life, Christine loved the outdoors and never passed up an opportunity to head out on a boat for a day of fishing, something she shared with her children as well as her grand and great-grandchildren. While she thoroughly took pleasure in going on Caribbean cruises and trips to Kentucky and North Carolina with close friends and family, gardening was her true passion. Her entire yard was breathtaking. She spent hours -often outside from daylight until dark- cultivating, weeding, growing, and nurturing the most incredible birds of paradise, stunning roses, and grand palm trees around her house. Her palm trees were so impressive that a few were even sold to Disney!
Christine’s devotion to her garden was only second to the love she had for her family. She rejoiced at hosting get-togethers in her home. From birthdays to graduations to holidays and more, her house was always the epicenter of the family gatherings. She made everyone she knew feel welcomed, special, and loved.
Christine has reunited with her husband Bud, her son Michael, her parents, and 9 of her siblings. She is survived by her sister Geneva “Nevie” Farris, son David (Debbie) Compton, her daughters Judy Compton Menendez, Peggy Compton Brown, Rebecca “Becky” Compton Grant, 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held 11am Monday, July 8th, 2024, with services immediately following at noon. There will be a private burial following the service.
