Betty Lou West (Davis), age 89 ½, passed away on Friday, May 31, 2024, at her home in Riverview, Florida, surrounded by loved ones. Betty was born December 22, 1934, in Shoopman, Kentucky – the 11th of 12 children total. She grew up and attended school in several mining towns in McCreary County, Kentucky, including Mine 18/Blue Heron. Betty was married to Alvis D. West, a WW II and Korean War Army Veteran, also from McCreary County, Kentucky. They moved to Anderson, Indiana and started their family in 1953. They were married for almost 66 years before Alvis passed. Betty is survived by their three children: Allen West (Juanita), Tim West (Claudia), and Sheryl McDonald (Bryant); eight grandchildren: Jennifer, Cristi, Josh, Mike, Travis, Zachary, Jada, and Wayne; twelve great grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren.
At various times, Betty was a homemaker, a restaurant owner, and a factory worker who retired from RCA Corporation manufacturing plant in Marion, Indiana. She was active in the Order of the Eastern Star - Chapter No. 179, in Alexandria, Indiana, and served as Worthy Matron (along with Alvis as the Worthy Patron) from 1988-1989. She enjoyed sewing and making quilts for her grandchildren.
Betty was devoted to her family and her faith. She loved gospel music and, while living in Indiana, regularly sang gospel music with family members. For most of her life she was a member of the Bethel United Baptist Church in Muncie, Indiana, where several of her brothers served as pastors and Betty taught Sunday school.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents, Charles E. and Zoe (Dobbs) Davis; her brothers, Stanley (Lexie), Paul (Mildred), Conley (Iona), Hollis (Pauline), Hoyt (Christine), Louie (Louise), and Israel; her sisters, Jacquelyn Glass (Howard), Charlene Vollenhals (Earl), Mary Doris, and Maude; and her great grandchildren, Reggie, Miah, and Johnny.
A Celebration of Life memorial service shall be held 11:00 A.M. Friday, June 14, 2024, at Southern Funeral Care. Immediately after the service, family and friends are invited to travel to the Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida, for the final placement of Betty’s and Alvis’ remains at 1:30 P.M.
