
Obituary for Betty Jean Mays Lewis
Betty Jean Mays Lewis, 92, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 6, 2021 at Tessera of Brandon, Florida. She was born March 13, 1929 in Covington, VA, to the late Melvin Lyle and Bettie Belle Weaver Mays. She was the loving and devoted wife of the late James Andrew Lewis for 64 years.
Survivors include his sons, James Kevin Lewis and wife Sandra of Valrico, FL, and Andrew B. Lewis and wife Lynn of MD; and grandchildren, Christopher J. Lewis of Plant City, FL, and Rebekah Marie Lewis Gallon and husband Nikki of Brandon, FL. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Joyce Lee Mays and Gladys Ann Mays Pullen.
Betty was raised in Covington through high school. She earned an Associate’s Degree from Bluefield College in Bluefield, WV and a BA in education from Southern Baptist Training School in Louisville, KY.
Betty was a teacher and retail worker, but mostly she raised her two boys and supported her husband. Because of Jim’s work as a minister of music, the family moved around Florida, Georgia, and Kentucky quite a bit, but ultimately settled in Kissimmee, FL. Betty and Jim were active members of First Baptist Church of Kissimmee.
A graveside service to celebrate Betty’s life will be held at Osceola Memory Gardens on Monday, September 20, 2021 at 11:00 A.M.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lifepath Hospice of Tampa, FL (https://lifepathhospice.chaptershealth.org/GeneralDonation ), or First Baptist Church of Kissimmee in Betty’s honor.
