Obituary for Arthur Lee Tidwell

Arthur Lee Tidwell of Brandon, Florida passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on September 14, 2025, at age 89. Born October 21, 1935 in Bainbridge, Georgia, Arthur was a graduate of Plant High School (1953), went to the University of Tampa, served in the U.S. Army 1955-1958, and graduated from the University of Florida in 1961.

He was married to his wife Ruthie (1964) for nearly 61 years, and was a member of St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church since 1968.

Professionally, he worked as a Civil Engineer for over 30 years, but his true life’s work was in helping others. When he was awarded the Shirley Latimer ECHO Volunteer of the Year award, he was recognized as, “what you'd call an unsung hero who quietly goes about his business of helping those in need.” He volunteered on countless mission trips, was a mission supporter, and served as an Honorary Emissary to the People of Zambia— during which time he sent thousands of handmade crosses to Zambian children. He was a Founding Member of Three Men and a Preacher, served Meals on Wheels for 20 years, and read weekly with students at Dover Elementary.

One of Arthur’s other great loves in life was building furniture and countless other woodworking creations that he shared generously with family and friends. It was this passion that inspired he and Ruthie to open a home furnishings store called Country Homestead, which they ran in Brandon for many years.

After retirement, he built a home in Franklin, North Carolina. He enjoyed traveling there, among other adventures around the country. His greatest joy came from (meticulously) planning trips, and sharing in the memories with Ruthie and their share group.

He is preceded in death by parents Mary and Rufus Tidwell, and brother Sidney.  He is survived by his wife Ruthie; daughters Laura (Tim) and Brenda (Brian); granddaughters Morgan (Cameron) and Ali; great-grandchildren Evie and Zane; sister Mary and brother Fred.

Arthur’s boundless kindness and generous spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Our heartfelt thanks to Lifepath Hospice, whose loving care & support was a true blessing in his final days.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church (3315 S Bryan Road, Brandon) on Tuesday, September 23. A visitation will be held from 3:30-4:30, followed by the service at 4:30. If you are unable to attend, you can find the livestream here— https://saumcbrandon.online.church

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Arthur’s legacy may donate to ECHO of Brandon, SAUMC Meals on Wheels, or SAUMC Three Men and a Preacher.
