RICKS, Arline Ann Shurtleff, 81, of Gibsonton, went home to her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 from Hawthorne Rehabilitation Center, Brandon. Born in Barre, VT on November 25, 1932, Arline was a member of First Baptist Church of Gibsonton for many years, attending with her husband George, until he passed away in 2010. Also a charter member of Gardenville Baptist Church, she deeply loved both church families. Preceded in death by her parents, Maxwell and Vivian Shurtleff; uncle and aunt, Leonard and Emma Learie; husband Reubin McGhin and son, Patrick; husband, George (Rex) Ricks; cousins, Dorothy Learie, Emilie Learie Keenan and step-brother, Vincent Shurtleff, she is survived by her nephew, Tim Shurtleff; sister-in-law, Vivian Needles; nieces, Jane Ann (Dan) Patterson and Melanie Kolben; cousins, Ann Wood, Jim (Betty) Learie, Leonard Learie, Kathy (Larry) Bahneman, David (Denise) Learie and Richard Learie; step-son, Michael (Sharon) McGhin and their children, Matthew and Stephanie. Arline's family moved to Gibsonton, FL in 1935, where she attended Riverview Elementary and Brandon High Schools. She graduated from FSU in 1954 to begin a 40 year career teaching for Hillsborough County. She taught 1st grade in various Hillsborough County schools for about 20 years. During that time, she was moved to the new Clair Mel Elementary School and was responsible for establishing the success of the teaching program there. After retirement, she assisted at First Baptist Church of Gibsonton in their Christian School for a period of time. She was also called back to Wimauma Elementary to assist with their reading improvement program for a semester. During her stay at Hawthorne, she was President of the Resident's Committee and she enjoyed preparing classroom activities for Dee Ramsey while at home last year and this year at Hawthorne.

Funeral Information

Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 20, 2014, at First Baptist Church of Gibsonton, with the family receiving friends one hour prior to services. Interment will be 10:30 A.M. Monday, September 22, 2014, at Sarasota National Cemetery.
