Obituary for Alvin A. "Al" Leathers
Alvin "Al" Leathers
LEATHERS, "Al", 82, died peacefully on Thursday, July 16, 2015, under the care of LifePath Hospice in Sun City Center. From very humble beginnings, he lived a wonderfully full life. Growing up in Belle Glade, he dedicated himself to athletics as a means of earning a college education and pursuing a career, knowing that the lessons learned from sports provided some of the key ingredients to success in life. Al shared his values of hard work, discipline, and perseverance with many athletes as Head Football Coach at East Bay High School, earning Coach of the Year honors in 1965. He retired as an Assistant Principal at East Bay with more than 30 years of outstanding service, taking great pride in the school. Football was such a passion in his early life; but his family and friends would say his devotion to his family, church, and his strength of character more clearly defined him. Al will be deeply missed for his dependability, loyalty, integrity, and love for the simple pleasures of life, like watching the rain, seeing his grandkids playing, walking three-miles a day, and competing with the faithful four on the golf course. Al is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rosemary Hurley Leathers; their daughters, Tammy (Chris) Rowden and Coco (Scott) Tyle. He enjoyed the love and activities of six adoring grandchildren: Zach, Matt, Allie, and Pete Rowden and Madi and Taylor Tyle.
